Need advice for this metal mix (R2R content)

Some of you may recognise this from KVR. It's my first real mix - being in a one-man-band as well as being perpetually broke has necessitated delving into the black art of mixing.

I like the R2R Akai 290 Fast 1 on guitars and bass, but remain undecided for the drums and 2bus (used Studer_-10_30a here).

I can't remember where but a thread here had someone remark that they use the Studer 0 15 for kick, snare, toms, and then the Studer 9a 15 or 6b 15 for overheads and room. Michael chimed in and said that they were the same settings he used. That was good enough for me so I usually start there, though I find the 0 15 takes too much attack off the kick so I use the same setting as my overheads to preserve the high frequencies.

Did you try the Akai 206 Fast 1 and 2 for guitar? Those are my two go-to selections for metal guitar, though they might just be the ones that work best with my mics.

The distorted drum room is pretty over-dominant. Nice idea, but it needs to step back an inch or 2 - covers the riffing/melody. And Addictive Drums are kind of over-used and easy to recognize :D
I guess that'll cure the obvious distortion a bit and it'll be alright !

It's Jamstix, not Addictive Drums.

Try Vcult for the drumbus. On the mixbus I use the Otari ATR DRV program.

I haven't heard of Vcult before. I take it it's a sampling of the Culture Vulture?

More civilized now, the snare is better. I'd say make the kick a bit bigger so it catches up to the snare bringing the kit in balance. Not necessarily louder, but snare+room takes up alot of space.
Guitars could do with some more crunch. Maybe Tapebooster or some other gritty distortion. You had some nice clipping going on in the previous mix...go for it !
