Its that time again...i need a New Computer.

Postby basaristudios@gmail.com » Mon Oct 12, 2015 5:45 pm

Hi all, this is my current system:

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower,
CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz,
MoBo: ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0,
GFX: MSI R6850 Cyclone PE/OC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5,
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB 1600 (PC3 12800),
CPU HS: Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler,
PSU: SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3,
Studio-HDD: WD Black 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s,
Data-HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5",
OS-HDD: WD Green 320GB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s,
ODD: Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner AD-7261S-0B LightScribe,
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Then i dragged long and complicated, was worried much about all kinds of things
but then found out some of them were not really important, one of them the noise
and stuff, of course i do not want it to sound like an airplane but nothing surgical.

And its that time of the year again, i wanna build new machine, this one works and
i am still using it, maybe will continue to use it with the new one or dismantle it
and use of of the stuff above in the new one, i guess the HDDs will be the only thing.

I do Audio and some Video Editing but mainly heavy Audio processing. My main question
is, is there anything out there that will actually give me performance worth the money
i will spend now or it will not be much more then this? Where do i start?
Graphics Card is important too, i wanna use it in CUDA. GC, CPU and MOBO i can spare 13-1500$ plus the rest of the stuff.

Let me start somewhere and see where we get. Of course i would love advices on all components.
Keep in mind, my Audio Disk Drive will run on Win 7 x64 and it can not be without a FW connection,
i will still use my old Card that i have in this computer that i am using now a TI 1394.

Thanks
Nedim

Hi Nedim,

It took me awhile to read through all the postings on this thread ... sorry for be-lated reply

Anyway ... looked over the wishlist. Looks like one heck of a system.

I can only give preliminary comment since my very new build. I went with the i7-5820K CPU. From my short time to research, it seemed a balanced choice for cores, clock, and cost.

For the other components, I went MSI X99a. WHY ? ... well, there were not as many reviews as the 'other' main boards, but of them, they were mostly positive. A tech friend also had good things to say on them ... but who really knows. Having all the features w/price is difficult enough to wade through. For what it's worth, the MSI board looks nice, seems very well made, and a layout without any problems. It had 10 SATA ports which also was important.

I was able to install the Noctua NH-D14 cpu cooler without issue. This thing is huge [compared to what I'm use to]. It fit my case, and importantly ... very quiet

I re-used my huge Lian-Li case, and Plextor burner.

I stayed with WD BLACK hard drives. Did not do the SSDrives. I understand the speed improvement, but I require storage. Honestly, my boot time with this new system is a fraction from what my previous 'high quality' build was. True ... these drives are not silent like the SS ones, but with 7 drives now in my case bay, it is still fine.

Lastly ... I went with 16 GIGs of RAM. Can always add more should I need.

Not much more I can add that would help you. Since I was forced to build, I'm happy with the performance and quality. Work with Nebula and ACQUA is now in a different league of workflow. I'm still building up my software installs ... and have not tried to really push the system ... but I add Nebs and Acquas without giving a second thought. I also change Neb to TIMED mode in a way not possible before. I'm sure I can bring this, or any other system, to bow before 'King Nebula' ... for now, everyone is playing nice.

Now I need to buy a new video monitor, and may have to buy a new printer due to lack of drivers.

fun

Thanks RJ, i replied to you already. I was thinking if the
5930 is worth the 200$ more...budget is not an issue but i
also do not wanna throw money just for no reason.

I'm not going to be able to advise whether the added cost is worth it.

The advice given me ... not really worth it. They also mention OC'ing ... but I've never done that. Although, the MSI motherboard has an 'optimization' feature that is 'suppose' to be a good way to bump without much drawback. Way to early for me to consider or worry about.

The always 'nagging' question ... can a computer be TOO powerful  and when does budget START to matter :| I know I toiled these very things. I would not want to influence your contemplation ;)

Lol...thanks RJ. Budget is not really an issue for me, i am just
stuck at the Motherboard and Cooling part because most of the
Coolers usually overhang over something and most likely the RAM,
i use Noctua on the current one and i hate it.

ASUS X99 is cool, it works with Xeon E5 v3 as well in case you want to upgrade to Xeon 12 cores, 14 core or 18 cores in the future!
