@ RJRollins: ...more cores are better of course than Mhz. Aqua and most daws use all cores. So these server cpus which have 18 cores and more but only 2.3 mhz are running out every i7^^

I think more real cores plus HT is the future in one CPU. But i do not know how that would increase the costs for consumers. Now the newest intel i7 uses 6 Core... and in two years they will go with 8 and intel i8... and then they will introduce 10 for consumers and so on. But Mhz will not go over 5.000 Mhz i guess. There seems to be a barricade.

I have been running with windows paging turned off for over 10 years now, through XP and Win 7. I run software development, audio processing and video processing software without any issues, ever. I have no plans to run any versions of Windows that are newer than 7, ever so I can't really speak to newer versions, sorry.

RJHollins wrote:You mention 'asus x99-a mobo'. In my search I found several flavors of this board. Can you tell me more detail of the board you choose ?

i chose this one because for me the more expensive ones have features that i don't need like wifi or extreme overclocking features. i also took the one with usb 3 and not usb 3.1.

the board is pretty basic but has a lot of usb and sata ports and it has 8 ram slots so i can expand to 64gb ram if i'll ever need it.
i could even upgrade the cpu later if the 8core cpus get cheaper, maybe there will even be future cpus for that socket but i don't know if that will happen.

it has a quad channel architecture for ram so you should take 4 ram chips to profit from that. the crucial ballistix sport ram chips work very well with this board and i could even oc these, too but i don't bother.

i like asus boards because i never had issues with them and they worked rock solid with intel cpus. it's a tandem that workes for me so i didn't want to change that and start to experiment.

i also upgraded the firmware of the bios to the newest version before even starting to install Windows. internal sound device was switched off in the bios, too.

OK ... getting my shopping list together. Here's where I'm at with it.

1. Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W BX80648I75820K Desktop Processor

2. MSI X99A SLI PLUS LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

3. CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 [16 Gigs]

4. Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM

5. Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler

6. Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

That's it so far.

I'm still looking for a video card ... I need to have dual displays. I don't do any gaming [or at least very rarely]. I'll also be looking for a new monitor [~24 inches]. Any suggestions of a video card ???

issue: My Audio interface is PCI [to a breakout box]. It seems new motherboards only have PCI-Express. Not sure what to do  I've heard of adapter cards, but no experience. Any insights ?!?

To those in the know ... whatcha think of my shopping list. Sure would appreciate a look over the shoulder to be sure I'm on the right path.

Thanks everyone !

I'm very happy with my 'ASUS GeForce GT 730 2GB Silent' card but I don't do any gaming.
If you are planning using two monitors I would suggest getting an HDMI to DVI cable for the second monitor. I found using the D-Sub port/cable produced slightly fuzzy graphics on the second monitor, especially fine text in Cubase mixer etc.

As far as your PCI soundcard goes I'm afraid it's pretty much obsolete these days. I was very happy with my Echo Layla but decided to go with RME HDSPe AIO card.
You could still try an adapter, those are pretty cheap and might be ok.

Also, you might consider water cooling for the CPU, those are generally quieter.

Other than that, your plan seems fine :).

You should get a ssd with 250 GB.

A very calm tower... with very less db tower cooling. And get a very good psu. Try to find calmest components.

1tb sata you could add after some mmonths.

wow, thats a pretty big cooler
make sure to install the ram first before mounting the cpu cooler.
the ram has 34mm height and should work with this cooler as it s compatible with ram up to 44mm height. it might be that the cooler will go over the first ram slots next to the cpu.

i use a 1024MB Sapphire Radeon HD 6450 Flex HD passive cooled video card. it's pretty cheap, has 2 dvi and one hdmi outputs and works fine with 2 displays but i don't do any games on that system.

don't know about the pci adapter, too.

Legacy OS. You should buy W10.

5. Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler

OK (good!)

RE: Legacy technology. Use SSD to get SATA3 transfer rates.

I'm using 32 inch TV as monitor at full HD resolution without extra GPU. Try first integrated GPU.
About PCI audio interface, sell it and buy a new one PCIe or external USB3/TB.
You can find 4K Philips TV 39 inch for 500 euros here, so sell legacy video monitors too. You can also buy a cheap W10 Tablet (200 euros) for touch screen control though VNC.
Remember buy a very good PSU.
