i went with a 5280k (easily oc to 4.0ghz with a noctua nh-u12s air cooler), asus x99-a mobo, 32gb crucial ballistix, samsung 250gb ssd, antec p280 case with 2 additional 120mm silent coolers, dark power pro psu and i am super happy.. win 7 pro 64 bit, cubase 8, samplitude pro x and it works super stable.

but i had an old 2core before with 4gb of ram...

Nice!

Don't forget to set Win 7 system properties/performance options/advanced/ 'adjust for best performance of' = 'background services' to get best low latency DAW driver performance :D

thanks man, already made that tweak ;)

i'm now looking for an audio interface upgrade since my old one started to do strange things and i had to switch to a smaller one. 2015 seems to be the year for a complete refresh of my workstation so far.

Thanks Dizmo,

You mention 'asus x99-a mobo'. In my search I found several flavors of this board. Can you tell me more detail of the board you choose ?

I should mention ... reading reviews on New Egg can be quite surprising. One could really question the quality of a product.

Anyway ... You Guys are very helpful, and I most appreciate. I've still questions. Particularly this:

I use Reaper ... and Nebula/Acqua are my core processing for my work as a Mastering Engineer. Trying to make an educated choice ... Do I understand correctly that more cores are better than just a faster CPU ? Knowing this can help me narrow the field. Support ???

thx

BTW ... I don't think I'd buy a commercially made computer.

That's debatable, from Windows 7 onward (in my opinion). It was a great "tweak" for XP and such, but I have used it and reverted it back to default and have not noticed any difference, even on huge projects. In fact, I even think that with Windows 8 and 10, almost any tweaks besides turning off the AV are possibly counter-productive. Tweak at your own risk...My i7 is nearly stock Windows 10 installation and it runs HUGE projects error-free and easily.

What about disabling virtual memory (cache)? i do that since i had 1 giga of Ram on XP but i've read somewhere it's not so good and could be risky for the system ...
