New PC build needed --- advice please

Postby RJHollins » Mon Aug 31, 2015 4:21 am

Hello Gang,

Just finished moving to a new home ... only to have a power outage that has taken out my main computer. Seems the motherboard and GPU were fried :o

OK ... so it was an older system that I had built based on a Q9450 CPU running XP-32 on a DFI-X38 motherboard. A new build was to be in the planning ... but now it is imperative.

It has been difficult to do much in the way of research [basically an iPhone web access, or a lame notebook that can lockup at any point. So I would turn to the Nebula community to help guide me to a new build.

I prefer to do a DIY build to maximize $$$ to performance.

The 2 critical components are the CPU and the motherboard. I'm most interested in a power system that will last.

So far I've looked into:

CPU.

INTEL Core i7 4790K Haswell

INTEL Core i7 5820K

Motherboards. I'm perplex. DFI is out of biz, so looking at things like ASRock Z97 Extreme 6 and/or MSI X99A SLIplus

My fried computer was maybe 10 years young. My knowledge about any of these things is quite dated

NEBULA and ACQUA are the core of my work.

Any insights ... advice would be most appreciated. Time is of essense as no computer means no work getting done :|

Thanks !

i have the INTEL Core i7 4790K Haswell since two weeks... it is of course better than my 6-Core from AMD... but aquas need power... so when i use all aqua plugins i have - around 7 i guess use in one project - with 5 nebulas and some other tools the cpu is already at maximum with spikes to 95%! I use Scarlet, TT 3B, TT 1B, 2xOchre, Honey, Blue Eq...

So for comparison my Titanium used 70% of AMD-CPU and now only 40 % of Intel. I got a small and better boost what helps me now... but even now i bet it could be better.

Of course even with my new CPU i have to increase buffersize to 1024 locked...^^

That is why i can tell you go with the INTEL Core i7 5820K because you can upgrade the cpu later when it is cheap...

Besides all that: Aqua must decrease CPU-use in future for sure;) Even if CPU's get better - but i guess CPU's have not much headroom at the moment. Since years we are in the 3Ghz to 4 Ghz Territory and more Cores.

Check i7 g4 vs g5 CORE number.
Check i7 g4 vs g5 how many CORE are using for GPU.
If you need a server computer buy Xeon version 3.

Check I/O features. Thunderbolt v3, 10 GB LAN, Dual LAN NIC, USB3, USB3C, etc.

Both, more cores and faster CPU.
All good quality components including PSU, RAM, etc.

I always use ASUS motherboards and they have been fantastic. Think about a smaller form factor too, you can get a full power computer into a mini-ITX with no compromise now.

I have this, but you would want an update on it:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H87IPLUS/overview/

I regretted only having one PCIe, so would look for a MB with two if i was getting a new one, most of the cases support it.

Having a small(ish) SSD inside and an external USB3 big drive works great! USB3 can reach full speed on magnetic drives no problem, if you are used to USB2 externals you are in for a nice surprise :D

how does it work with 3x TT3b, Scarlet and Ultramarine plus some more aquas at 1024 Buffersize? I actually come with the same CPU to 100% CPU use very fast. Problems are the heavy spikes i get with every aqua. So even ochre alone does sometimes spikes till 70% when other aquas are in use.

Should be fixed in CORE7 but also you can test better audio host available in the market.

I very much appreciate the comments and advice so far given. I'm sure we all have struggled with this topic.

I'll mention, I have a large Lian-Li case that can handle a normal sized motherboard. The Power supply is still good and high quality. Other components will also be saved from my old system.

Still much confusion with things like D3 vs D4 RAM, solid motherboard, etc. I read user reviews from New Egg.com and it all over the map.

Cores vs Speed. What is the pivot point? No doubt more and faster is better ... but the products seem to make it tough to compare easily.

thoughts? addition insights 8-)
