Walky Talky sound ?

Postby DavidMeShow » Wed Nov 09, 2011 5:29 pm

Hi guys ! :)

Few years ago, I recorded this song. I always love the sound coming from this walky talky and I recorded my voice by adding a microphone to another walky talky under a box.

I already tried Speakerphone but so hard to get this real sound... Do you guys know a Nebula librairy with this similar sound or do you know a plugin that can do that kind of effect ? I know this is mainly about EQs and Distortion but can't reproduce this same effect with plugins yet...

Thanks ! :)

Well i bet that you already own mic's, right? And lot's of plugins, right? You can buy very cheap walky talkies for less than more plugins, in my opinion. Then shape the sounds with what you have. And then you'll own some 2 way radios that can come in handy for between rooms while recording! Anyway, I am actually serious. You could try the Cupwise libraries, there are some very awesome and unusual tools in the TubeFM stuff he makes.

Thank you richie43 ! :)

Recording those walky talky is hard because of signal noise. I'm going to take a look again to the Cupwise libraries and trying more with Speakerphone to make my work faster. Thanks for your help ! :D

Always a pleasure to try to help. I didn't mean to sound sarcastic, I sometimes just think that if I have a chance to use a real sound as opposed to an emulation of a sound, it will give my recording more cohesion, even if it means some noise. And in your case, that slight signal noise is a part of what makes that very sound that you are looking for. I have used the 2 way radio sound before in recordings, and the times that it was emulated, I kept looking for the missing part that gave it realism, and it ended up to be some low-fi quality, or crappy noise! Good luck, and try to post your results and how you did it. I am curious now.....

I think you are right about recording real things. I use so much time trying to find the good plugins and finally I could have used this time to setup the real things. Ahah!

Thanks again! :)

...or you could make your own (noise free) Nebula preset. If you have a walkie talkie, but don't know how to use NAT, just record the test-tone via the the speaker and send it to me- I'll edit it for you.

Yeah the cupwise programs 1st come to mind. I would add LP/HP filtering before hitting the radio programs to create the level of lofiness needed.

Not to long ago I did this with my "amp deluxe" program as well.
"Vintage L Filter Set" into "amp deluxe" worked well

i've been scheming on doing a set of walky talky effects for a WHILE. i just don't think they would be nearly as commonly useful as my tube radio effects. so my priority has been to do more of those instead (but i think i'm done with them for a while). the walkys would probably always have a very very bandpassed response, to the extent that you would rarely use effects made from them. i have other ideas that i think are more useful, but at some point i might get around to doing something with walkys. if someone else did it really well before i got around to it, i'd be glad because then i wouldn't have to.

just one of the things i would do first would be a set of junky to decent transistor radios, but i have other non-radio ideas too. :)

Yuval sent me cool programs that i'm going to try in my next songs. You can maybe ask him about them. :)
