Sound On Sound Cupwise NAT Sampling Guide Pt 1 Out Now!

Postby david1103 » Fri May 30, 2014 2:19 pm

I just got back from the local newsagents and found this in the latest SOS:

"Sample Your Gear With Acustica Audio Nebula"

(Preview, you need to buy the magazine...)

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun14/a ... mpling.htm

Awesome!!! He even gives away his special enhanced NAT presets to download :D

you can download a single loose PDF for 1 dollar if you don't have a subscription. Nice if you're only interested in this article :).

Nice to see Nebula 'out and in the open' like this :)

edit: although the link to Tim's sessions are not working.

A reverb-session with up to 10 kernels + a simple single control for reverb-level (instead of the old fx1 + fx2 to control the harmonics + verb separately) sounds really handy.

edit 2: Found them. Link on SoS is here -> (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun14/a ... -media.htm). It's a 200mb zip file with the official nat sessions, Tim's custom sessions and the demo programs he created in the article (as I read it, some of a Fulltone OCD that are not working OK on purpose, one which is 'quite ok', and some of an older spring-reverb unit).

yeah

i definitely didn't give away all my secrets in that guide. it's aimed at beginners, after all. those are the templates i actually use currently, if i'm doing a program of those types. BUT i still do a lot of other customizations beyond those templates, most of which you'd need the more advanced NAT (for devs only) to even do. so using those templates won't give you the exact type of result you'd see in my recent releases in a comparable type of program, but will give you some of those changes i've made. basically they offer alternatives to the ones in the acustica batch (which they are based off of, but tweaked in several ways) that some people might prefer.

actually with the case of the reverb template, i've been focusing on having adjustable things sampled, and along with the fade control i've added in, that means i use even more advanced templates (than the one in the download), but those also require a ton more adjusting after the templates are used (with the dev NAT you can still do more after using it). but if i were going to do a simpler reverb like the earlier ones i released (tube fm3, cassetteverb), the template in that download would be what i would use, and i think those programs would be better if i went back and updated them to use it (which i'd like to do if i had time).

Great article, I've been thinking of trying this for a while..
One thing I didn't understand is, how do you sample different stages?
For instance a tape recorder, I'd like to sample the results at different input stages and then have the parameter available in Nebula.
This tutorial only explains how to take a dynamic snapshot of a single hardware setting, correct?
