skins causing blue screens

Postby jbraner » Thu Apr 08, 2010 9:34 pm

Giancarlo,

I tried out the 07_REDBOX_TEAM and 08_REDBOX_STD2 skins today - to see if they're different than the first redbox one. Both of these caused a crash - using 1.3.401 x64 in Windows 7 64 bit. The other new one 30_SK_VINTAGE_MACHINE works fine.

Do you know what causes these crashes? This is really bad for a skin to cause a blue screen. If I didn't have nebulaconfig I wouldn't be able to change back to a good screen without editing the xml file.

Has anybody else used the 07 redbox and 08 redbox with nebula x64 1.3.401?

Is there a way to stop the complete windows crash, and just load a basic default skin if there is a problem with the chosen skin?

Thanks

I tried them and I didn't get a crash. I'm on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Did you load these skins in the middle of a project with several instances inserted or on a fresh new project?

No, I just copied them into my skins directory and assigned them with nebulaconfig. After the crash with 07 and then 08 - I also got a crash with the original 01 redbox skin, which had been working fine!
After *another* reboot, I set up nebula with a different skin, which was fine and then went back to 01 redbox and it was OK.
So I don't know what's going on. Something seems to get corrupted after the crash sometimes - maybe the xml file?
For me - it's not worth all the reboots, and copies of the nebula files etc - just to try a skin ;-)
I just load up SONAR with a blank project when I'm trying a new skin...

Wait a minute, what Nebula version are you running? latest? Because in latest version we have this to change skins:

Try it that way and see if you experience any crashes. Select your skin, hit save, remove nebula and load it again.

Yeah - but if your skin causes a crash, you'd never be able to change it back to a good one - would you? ;-)

In other words, you can't get to that screen when you cause Nebula, then SONAR, then Windows to crash...

Hi,

I tried out the 07_REDBOX_TEAM and 08_REDBOX_STD2 skins again today and they work fine! I haven't changed anything since last week - so I don't know what is happening here. After the first crash, it seems like something gets cached, which causes further crashes (when the skin is actually OK) - but I don't know what caused the first crash.

Also - what is the reason for these two skins? Besides a slightly different Nebula logo, is anything else different about them?
