Overdrive / Heavy Saturation

Postby muckleberryblim » Tue Jan 25, 2011 4:42 am

I've checked out the Nebula Commercial library but I can't get much drive out of the pres and tape collections so am on the lookout for something a bit more gnarly, to really spank drum sounds with.
Am gonna have a crack at sampling a cranked AKAI S900 pre, as that works wonders, but can anyone recommend some progs of gear I don't already own(!)
I hear good things about R2R but a less extensive (cheaper ;) ) library would be better. Niceone!

Hi there,

I don't think you can find a real big fat distortion on Nebula - maybe I'm wrong. But here are some really nice overdrive presets :

There is also a preset in the original library which name is "Microdistortion" (in the preamp library).

Finally, there is, as you mentioned, the R2R from CDSoundmaster along with the Tape Booster + which are gorgeous !

you can get teh heaviest results with the tapebooster+ library. You still need a few instances if you really want to go mad.

Giancarlo posted something a month ago or so that he is working on a new engine update to be able to sample more harmonics and therefore heavier overdrive. So you should maybe wait for that, cause with the current engine you cant go too far.

Cheers Marchenoir, I have tried a few of the progs you reccommended but like you say, none of them are real big and fat!
The Olonga program is really nice but I'd like a bit more and the Raturation sounds great but I've got a Pro-Co Rat already.

Gonna try out the tapebooster pack though.

Interesting that the harmonics are limited, I didn't realise that, explains a lot. Might wait for the new core before I delve into sampling then.

My pleasure !

Yes, you should really try the Tape Booster+. Great sound !

I don't know how much you want your drums distorted, but you could also try your ProCo Rat on them.

Any updates on the engine for heavy overdrive?

Was this the micro kernals that was talked about a while back?
