Driving the AlexB Console Bus

Postby powderfinger » Tue Dec 14, 2010 5:24 am

I know there's been a lot of emphasis on getting input levels around -18db. I was wondering how many of you drive it harder than that?

I've been doing -18db for all of the tracks and driving the input of the master bus closer to -15db and it seems to add that last bit of extra harmonic distortion that that glues the final mix together.

What levels are you guys running into the master bus of AlexB's consoles?

Normally I run it to 0dBVU (ambient-relax-cbillout music) but for some kind of music I push it to +3dBVU.

Good to see you posting Alex. This has been confusing me as well. I'm unsure of the gain staging. I am setting levels of sources like bass guitars, vocals, overheads to average at -18dBFS, peaking at about -12dBfs
How much headroom is available in the VBC, how far can i drive it?

You can push more than +3dBVU but Nebula preamp EPs does not emulate compression/limiting when you are near saturation zone.
