tame highs on R2R

Postby timothyallan » Sun Aug 22, 2010 2:01 pm

I find my highs (hihats mainly) get really boosted when using the Studer 15 programs in the R2R library. Any clever tips on keeping the high freq's in check other than just a shelving eq after?

using some other program apart from Studer 15, that doesn't boost highs?

The 30 ips does as well... as do most of the Otari programs. I always thought tape would dull/dim the highs actually.

I really like the Akai tape machine for a little "dulling" of the highs. Never tried it on hihats though, might be a little much for your application

Yeah possibly... I'm looking for something for a drum bus and the Akai usually kills too much for me.

interesting I was looking at the R2R package to take out some of the ITB harsh and mellow the high end...so is it not so suited for this?

The R2R can be very suited for that. It contains a LOT of programs, and therefore tons of different colors. Some of the Otari programs for instance are perfect for mellowing the high end while giving a very fat sound.

I think every Nebula owner would want to own R2R, it's essential.

I'd use HF limiting, similar to WARMTH function on FATSO

It's very intriguing that lots of R2R tape programs have high frequency boost.

Before using it, I always thought tape might mellow out the high frequency. But the high frequency boost is so crispy and addictive, I love its sound. 8-)

However,I guess the 3rd stage of R2R is ageing tapes with high end roll-off naturally.
