Tried CDSoundmaster PP2 reverb? There's always an instance on my drum buss. They are amazing.

CDS's reverb is great... I have a feeling the Real Rooms might turn into another Mammoth waiting game... fingers crossed it doesn't...

Theater of Life by Room Hunters

Postby Room Hunters » Wed Sep 29, 2010 6:38 pm

Hello to all,

Thank you for your patience !

We've been really busy the whole summer. And there was a lot of work on our first release, but now we are getting closer to the release. The price will be 12€ (Incl VAT) for nebula librairies and 24€ for the Aqua Powered plug-ins.
It should be released late in october.(we still have some GUI bugs, and we need to make the shop on the server).

So our first release is gonna be the "Theater Of Life", it's an amazing sounding room, very high celling, with a short RT60, and a good modal dispersion. It's just damn perfect for drums.

We've sampled two unreleased rooms before (Thunder Room, Farmer Room), and we had a lot of experiment, and reflexions about the Virtual Room Miking plug-ins.

We spend a lot of time developing a nice GUI, with proper parameters. For exemple, the input level meter is a DB SPL meter. It's very unusual (unique ?), but it has a lot of meaning to the philosophy of the plug in. :

Am I recording a rock drum in the room ? DB SPL should be 90-110

Am I recording a oboe in the room ? DB SPL should be <70

It's a caracteristic of the source.

Then the microphone go into a high end preamp (with a fixed gain setting, for this release), which is more or less driven by the level of the mike, and therefore the caracteristic of the source.

You'll have a lot of microphones/preamps choices :

DPA 4006 (Decca tree configuration) on Gyraf Tubes or Audient
Schoeps CMC (MS) on Sound SKulptor MP32
Sennheiser MD21 ( A B stereo )on broadcast mini mixer (80 db of gain, transformer input/output)
OktavaMod MK 319 (ORTF Stereo) on Sound Skulptor N**e
OktavaMod MK 012 ( A B Stereo) on Audient
Senheiser MKH MS (50/30)on sound skulptor A*I or audient
N*****n U 87 (MONO) on Gyraf Tube
KM 184 (ortf) on audient

On the acustic side there are two other parameters : The depth and angle of the source relatively to the microphone pair.

You can move the source in an area of 36 interpolated positions. To help the user we asked Giancarlo, to develop a XY Pad, so you can directly move the virtual source on the picture of the room.

Since it's a real room, moving the source in the space will also change the frequency response recorded by the microphones. For exemple, if you put the source close to the back wall you'll have a +6db bass extra boost. That's what "searching for the sweetspot" is about.

As a gift to the nebula community we'll release an EXCLUSIVE (not included in Aqua release) fully fonctional free program. And because we are full of love, we'll release also a specific nebula skin, that support XY Pad, you could use for all the Room Hunters programs, and also a Room Hunters "traditional" nebula skin.

Futur rooms will follow with enhanced possibilities.
