A*I 550A Blind Test Rock Drum&Bass (VBQ V.S. Waves)

Postby vicnestE » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:13 pm

Here's a short example of rock/metal drum with bass tracks.
The original files were provide by enriquesilveti.
Divided into 4 waves: one mono kick drum, one mono snare drum, one stereo overhead, and 1 mono bass. (Real instruments)
Download link:

(ABX files)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9609516/A*I%20EQ%20Bypassed.rar
(with all A*I EQs bypassed for reference if you needed)
All files are in 44KHz 24bit.

Some compressor/expanders are used to control the dynamics, all EQs are Waves 550A, extreme boost/cut are used.
Lots of mid frequency boost!

All VBQs use 5Kernel programs for each band. And Waves 500A analog switch on. 2 files are almost at the same loudness.

Snares went through plate reverb to make it bigger and sustain better. No other effects are applied.
In real mixing, I might apply other effects to enhance the sound.

AS usual, please choose the one you favor and vote.
Give some comments if you like to share with us what you hear.

I will announce the result a few days later.

Have a nice day.

Thanks Enrique for the files.

For listen the full song go to http://www.fughuweb.com.ar/ and play Dead End Start

About Fughu:
After several years of formations and deformations Alejandro Lopez (drums) and Ariel Bellizio (guitar) Fughu's basic and original cell, found Marcelo Malmierca (keyboards) who added a new and original element to the band. A little time later Juan Manuel Lopez (bass) took charge of the bass and closed the circle that creates the chemistry of Fughu; but the X factor was still missing.
Santiago Bürgi (vocals) appeared and with his one of a kind mix of a classical lyric tenor (member of the Colon Theater, the most important theater in Argentina) and a heavy metal singer and a powerfull attitude on stage, ended creating the monster named "Fughu".

From that moment, Fughu started to grow really fast being one of its highlights to have be chosen by Dream Theater itself to open its show in Argentina, playing for more than 5.000 people. With a powerful and a rocker posture, FUGHU's show also incorporates elements of the theater and opera, generating an experience which nobody can´t stop talking about.

To place them in the current of Progressive Rock would be the least unjust thing to define this band of diverse influences. Maybe a mix of Pink Floyd and Metallica would be more accurate, or an intermediate zone that ranges between powerful rock, with sophisticated or dense passages, or even simple songs, with a strange and beautiful touch.

(Fugu, japanese name that receives the globe fish, is considered to be a plate as esquisite as dangerous, which particularity resides in the poisonous character that lies in certain sectors of the the fish itself. This poison is neurotoxic and its ingestion can, in some cases lead to death but in turn, the absolute absence of this element removes its special flavor. Therefore the preparation must be effected only by experts).

I was surprised at how similar they sounded. It was a tough choice. I liked B better in general. More open sounding. But I preferred the high hat in A. The hi hat was smeared more in B and I didn't like that.

This mix is different to the other drum only example.
I mixed it with VBQ rather than WAVES550A.

And I wanted the in your face snare sound and button end with clarity and punch.

Nebula wins if you agree with my goal and my perception. 8-)

Waves 500A is pretty good in comparison.
(No wonder Waves A*I has some good reputation)
S*L channel E vs CLQ is not the same case,
and VEQ3(should be based on 1073) vs 73eQ is very different.
I am not sure the "so vintage" sound from VEQ3 is right.

Only a few notes for you to compare. Good luck guessing.
I myself can't gurantee 100% correct when blind test.

Here i like the B version much better. The attacks are much brighter and solid with the low punch.

edit:
My bad, xchanged the files.

Tips: no matter listneing loudly or quietly, bass of VBQ one is more clearer than Waves 550A. I intentionaly wanted the bass clearer because there's only 2 instruments.

Actually i listened them in wrong order and thought A was B.

So i changed my vote to A. The B file is more muddy at 200Hz and less open highs.

I still dont know which is which cause i never heard a real A*I.
