Good point basaristudios. The chain before the Group level has been captured with actual hardware. Of course you can add the stages again with Nebula, but if the recording gear was good there is no need to, and if it wasn't there's not much you can do anyway. I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks Nikolay. You are exactly right, under ideal circumstances you don't have to do any mixing after the recording for classical. Unfortunately the circumstances are often not exactly ideal, at which point a few very subtle corrections can be helpful. I'll definitely try your high shelfing eq suggestion. Do you have suggestions for valve/transformer colours you would use?
Thanks for the links Emilie. I have Room Hunter's TOL, and while I absolutely love the concept I find the room to be too coloured to be used on orchestral/classical music. It's simply not the right room for that task in my opinion. Also I usually don't use any compression at all, as it kills the natural dynamics of the orchestra. The tape sims can be very useful though if used subtly, I'm going to try that.
