Which C*l*ec console for that Abba sound?

Postby beingmf3 » Sun Mar 29, 2015 1:48 pm

At CDSM I've seen 2 console programs that might fit the bill - the Vintage BBC and the Custom British Recording. I have no idea which is which :)

On top, would TimP's Cal DL1656 add to the sound?

¡Muchas gracias!

H******* console but good luck sounding like Abba. the console would not give you the sound.. you need to write awesome songs, arrangements, wonderful playing, amazing female vocal, same drum sound, room and recording technigues.. gear is maybe 2% of the sound I guess this is how unique Abba was :)

same console as Michael Jackson Thriller
Plajia new album Piggie Park out NOW. (Pronounced plah-gee-ah) We make music, fock a genre. On Spotify and Bandcamp www.plajia.com

Oh sh*t - right! They used a H******* indeed! Why did I think "C*l*ec"? A friend of mine has a smaller one, and to be honest: I don't like the EQs that much. The overall sound is "good", but not stellar. Hm.

btw. I know ... I was especially referring to the console sound.

oh I love Cal*ec eq! cleaner than S*L. I guess we all like something different. 8-) they are also clean all round a little like the Cadpan, which is similar type of console.

There is a mention here of abba but this is later.

So, indeed - at Polar they had a H******* AND a Calrec!
ATM they're selling a Calrec channel strip for "only" 3500$ - someone get it and nebulize it!

(I once tried to nebulize a filter but something went wrong. Then I tried something else ... wrong again, so I am the wrong person)

@Tim: I was referring to the H******* EQ - the Calrec I've never heard.

Scroll down to read an in-depth interview with Abba engineer Michael Tretow .. it would seem the 'Abba sound' is due to a lot more factors than a console http://abbamikory.blogs.com/abbamikory/abba/page/18/

Yeah - cool! I've read it ages ago, but it's always good to have a different perspective on it after some time.
Interesting 1, and never tried: "underheads".
Interesting 2: later he would record on 30ips. That makes for the airyness, the crispness of those later Abba tracks (which I am always amazed of, from a technical-aesthetical point of view only :) Well, and the bass lines of course. Pure genius!).
Gotta try soon. Won't touch that H******* though :)

Hi there,

If you are interested in a very unique C*l*ec then the one to check out is:

http://cdsoundmaster.com/site/cds-softw ... bcneb.html

http://cdsoundmaster.com/site/cds-softw ... lugin.html

It is a one-of-a-kind unit designed to provide a combination of the best attributes of a N**e and an API- in the simplest of terms.

But, like others mentioned, the ABBA sound is a part of a process as well. Tape, boosted console and post-transfer high end eq, the group itself of course, and keeping levels hot to prevent hiss.

But, yes I think you would enjoy this console- email me if you would like it and I can send a discount or do a combo discount if interested in the plug-in as well.

Thanks!
Michael
