CPU will be fairly high for the auto pan but the manual will be very low!

For the life of me i can not figure out WHY i would use a PAN
instance on my tracks...anyone care to explain?

Maybe think of it like a preamp/line... It's still running through a entire line and master bus. You have also a bit of crosstalk (maybe you'll dig this maybe not but I guess it's staying true to the console) also the auto pan is unique due to sampling and the log/pan law...(pan was sampled in many positions) as you put the volume fader up the harmonics also change. meaning every position has a unique sound but of course very subtle.
I had to edit out harmonics on extreme left and right which would have deconvolution errors on it. I'm guessing this is normally why you don't see panners with harmonics in nebula. If you look on webpage there is a example of the crosstalk. You'll see it has a increase in bass and presence.

where would the Pan go? Before or After LinIn?
