Anyone know if hardware UA 2108 sampled?

Postby Lonnie » Wed Apr 02, 2014 8:39 pm

There are certain microphones of mine that like Nebula's stock library Los Angeles 2d10, but, lacking access to the hardware I'm suspicious there may be better capture techniques that have developed since 2009 or whenever the Prism Orpheus came out

I did a quick search for more information, and as described below, this is a sleeper unit we (at least I) never hear about.
"The whole look, feel, vibe and sound of the U*******l A***o 2108 Dual Mic/Instrument Preamplifier says “rock” to me."
-Barry Rudolph, Mix Sept. 2002

Another quote on the same page is more telling:
When I first ran kick and snare through this preamp I just about sh*t my pants.” -Larry Crane, Tape Op Sept/Oct 2002

Source and more information:
http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2004/marc ... tent4.html
Note: Preceding the 2108 were the 1108s as console modules.

p.s. Oh no, I have two sources, one are notes I made from who knows when, saying the preset Los Angeles 2d10 is an LA-610. However, at http://www.learndigitalaudio.com/ it's listed as the topic of this discussion. Who knows? No one told me for sure....

Thanks for your thoughts, insights, great revelations. Corrections.

1108's are my drum overhead pre of choice. Maybe it's time I nebulaize these guys.? I racked these up not that long ago.

On a related note if you like the UA 1108 sound, you will be into the langevin vibe. Check out the L-401 Vintage Console

You sir have my full attention

That's a nice website too, I'll be spending time there today. Just now I had a laugh, A/B'ed the 76 and thought "damn the 1st one sounds better" and when I re-looked the 2nd one was no effect on. Time to put a few bucks on another PayPal card (they're so convenient and almost any store carries them now).

So what do you think rhythminmind? Does the tone of the stock Nebula library Los Angeles 2d10 preset lend itself more to the hardware LA-610 or 1108/2108 ya think?

Drop me a line if you need a tester

-Addendum- FWIW, up top I posted the link to a site which expresses an obsessive enthusiasm for these preamps. The 8,000,000-pound gorilla in the room is Chuck Ainley. In country music his credits include everything on the Country station day and night. Yes I noticed LOL

I just did some reading on the 1108 sound, and I see that this is a much beloved unit by many. You mentioned in your post earlier that you use this for drum overheads, so do you find that is where they shine? I know you can use any pre amp on any source, but some pres are more suited for specific uses I believe.

I use them for Room or Overheads mostly. But they excel/are best known on guitar & vocal. Love the sound, smooth but cut thru a mix.
