The different detection modes (for example ENV17) change the way the compressor reacts to different sounds. They are not trying to emulate what the original hardware does, but expand on that and give more options.

The feedback amount again changes the way the compressor reacts. Feedback compression is associated with the way older compressors used to work, its just different.

I recommend you make a line up of Nebula's in your insert effects rack, load the different programs, give them the same settings and flip between them all to hear the difference. If you happen to be using Reaper this is easy as you can just use CTRL-B and cycle through them one by one.

is this just a channel compressor? Or should it also be used on 2bus?

That's the case with any compressor richie.
But what I meant was, is this compressor modelled from the channel compressor on the SSL9000? Because if so, I'd come to the conclusion that it wasnt built for bus duties....

I think it does work well on two buses, but you can't slam it to hard on the master. On the master bus i find it a little harder to nail a mix with it, but it is sweet when you do, (you just can,t bring the threshhold down to much, or bring up the ratio to high.
