update:ShootoutOTB vs Nebula Waves UAD Slate Stripbus Satson

Postby mpodrug » Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:13 pm

Some guy posted in gear...z a shootout which has been deleted for whatever reason.
I still have the links.

Can you spot the OTB mixes (N**e 1073 Channel, S*L X-Desk summing mixer)? Or can Hybrid and ITB sound better?

Here are the other contenders:

Hybrid:
X-Desk + Waves Kramer KMT (15ips, over biased)
X-Desk + UAD Ampex ATR 102 (456, 15ips, +3)

Plugins:
Stripbus, Satson, Waves NLS, Slate VCC Brit 4k, Slate VTM, VCC+VTM, Nebula CLC, CLC+R2R+Tapebooster, Nebula The Globe+ Signaltonoize NAG tape+ Tapebooster.

The users who posted the mixes tried to achieve the best sound possible (to their taste) with those chains.

Bypassed:
..
Blindmixes:
...

Load them in your DAW, and solo each track as it plays. I've done my best to level matched them at the loudest parts, but if it's not enough for you, do it yourself in your DAW.

Edit: Pick your top 3 and then 1 absolute favorite.
The top 3 can have different colors but yet the best improvement compared to the original.

I'll post the wav names later.
Have fun.

Edit: I took down the links due to copyright issue.

Thanks a lot mpodrug!

I'm not able to download the last file. Is it me?

Dropbox is so bad. They deactivated the links due to too much traffic. I'm uploading them on another server. Hang on.

That's a nice idea mpodrug.
But:
mpodrug wrote:Can you spot the N**e 1073 mix?

Amongst the plugins you describe few of them emulate a 1073 :?:
Nebula CLC is an S*L 4000E,Satson is something on is own,Globe is a Sphere, not sure tat Strip bus got a "N**e mode" or VTM/R2R/Tape booster are tape emu.

But as a general "coloration quality" test, it's fun.

No, you misunderstood. Among the mixes there's one mix through a real N**e 1073.
Yes, i know CLC is an 4000E, etc.. I know they all have other characters of coloration. In fact, the files were made by different users and then level matched.

I just want to know if you can spot an OTB mix out of the bunch or not, among them are also cheap and expensive plugins, so it's very interesting if it plays any kind of role or not.

BTW i'm still waiting for a user who will give me another mixes through UAD, Waves Spike, and another OTB S*L Desk, so it will be very interesting.

Just pick your 3 favs, you'll be surprised by the time i reveal it, i see no vote yet.

I got you now.
It's more a test about "find the hardware"... yeah, people (and me first) will be surprised by the result.

That said what I said above still relevant.(you still "comparing" green vs.red, with this, it's hard to say that the green got a higher quality than this red... ;) ).

That said, I use (or tried) almost all the plugins you mentioned. They're real good.Real, real good...Especially in a full mix context.

Hmmm.. 268 views and no one voted yet? Cmon guys.
It's not just about finding the hardware. I found some big quality differences between the mixes. That's why i said pick your top 3 and then 1 absolute favorite.

Preferred to bypassed mix:
Top Favorite: 6
2nd: 4
3rd: 3
4th: 5 (close to #3)

Different, but a little not preferred to bypassed: 2
Definitely not preferred to bypassed:
9, 10, 7, 8, 1

I'm very curious to know what the identities are! Can you private message me the answers? I won't tell!
