Test: MWD vs RND5043 / MWeQ vs RND5033

Postby AlexB » Wed Jul 20, 2011 11:14 am

I have re done the mix in Samplitude12, which sounds a lot better than Nuendo4 (clearly: perfectly matched), and compared the "coming soon" Modern White Dynamics with Steinberg RND5043.
But not only this, I have compared the Modern White eQ with Steinberg RND5033.
All settings are matched at +/-0.1dB

Why ? I don't want the WAR but no all people have this fu***** e-licenser
You can listen and decide yourself what you prefer and eventually to buy ;)

Audio demo: Listening Room

Some graphic consideration:
(open the pic in a new page to see the full resolution)

MWD -> RND5043 frequency response (flat)

MWD -> RND5043 THD (-4dB GR)

RND haven't the characteristics roll-off in the high-end by custom Rupert's transformers.

You can share this post.
Cheers 8-)

Actually I can't remember any of the 3rd party developers or Giancarlo ever making this claim. If anything, they are the first to say Nebula is the "next best" thing after hardware.

Anyways, thank you AlexB for the files, I'm very interested to hear the new compressor.

For this reason I haven't put the Hardware mix (fish vs apple) but only the plugins (apple vs apple).

I can say:
- I can hear the difference between the MWeQ and the Hardware
- I can hear the difference between the MWD and the Hardware
- I can hear the difference between the RND5043 and the Hardware
- I can hear the difference between the RND5033 and the Hardware

but.... HEY... I'm not 80 years old !

Just a sidenote.

Alex B: The difference you hear between Sam an N4 could it be the dithering? In the old days when working in Sam it was default ON, not in N4 or later versions for that matter.

No, it's the audio engine, not only the summing engine but the audio engine. Simply importing and exporting a track in Nuendo, the exported sounds different with some muddiness, unfocused bass and more narrowed and congested stereo image, less life. Probably if you haven't good room and accurate monitor it's quite hard to hear but... There is 8-)
Listen the original mix in the console section (nuendo) and the original mix in the compressor section (samplitude). The mix are matched at +/-0.1dB.

If exporting a file changes the audio characteristics then the new file is not bit accurate and would not phase cancel with the original. I don't know which version of Nuendo you are using, but I remember similar reports a few months ago about a bug which was indeed causing the export to be inaccurate.
