Gain Staging with AlexB consoles and R2R

Postby powderfinger » Wed Aug 04, 2010 6:09 am

Okay. I'm admittedly a bit confused about how these libraries deal with gain staging (I've only mixed digitally and have just started to learn about this).

So, if I'm gain staging these as recommended with AlexB console into R2R, it should look like this?

input -18 dBfs into AlexB
increase output level up to ~0dBfs (or what the main track level will be)
input 0 dBfs into R2R

Is this the recommended use?

That is my understanding how to do it.

Perhaps Mangel could release an alternative version of R2R that is edited to be perfectly compatible with Alex' libraries. I would love that.

you can adjust the gain in at any time on any patch by editing the global pads.

Okay so my rendering chain is:
-18 --> MBC --> R2R --> MBC

So what do I fill in for R2R Pad in = ? & R2R Pad out =?

A Normalized Sine Wave reduced by -18db represents 0db on the VU meter of an Alex B Console.

Anything over -18db = Overdrive.

Example, a Normalized Sine Wave reduced by only -6db represents +12db Overdrive on the VU meters.
