SOS Massive Passive UAD vs. Analog ..vs Nebula

Postby Matyas » Tue Jun 29, 2010 9:35 am

I'm find this:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul10/a ... eaudio.htm
There is raw files too.
I donwloaded and take some fast tests with massive passive nebula program. I cant set accurate that settings but I try to close to them. The result is great!
My friend in the studio (blind test) cant decide which is the analog or which the nebula but He every time know which is the UAD. I have uad card and like it, but in my workflow I use uad just for compression. Sorry for my chaffering but this test make me a good day. Cheers!

Nobody is excited about this???
I find it very reassuring in our choice of Nebula as a plug-in host!
Just think of the price of UAD M****y (or the original hardware!!!) and the fact that on Nebula you can use the M****y -ahem Mammouth- multiple times.
Is only our skills and ears that limits us.

I'm just jaded from being so used to Nebula stacking up so well against its hardware counterpart :D . I used to think "Oh my gosh, the Nebula program sounds just like...that's amazing!" but lately it has been more "Of course the Nebula program sounds just like..."

But there is one limitation beyond our skills and ears: resources. Nebula has bent my workflow to its will. I'm not really complaining about that fact, the upsides well outweigh the downsides for me, but imagine Nebula as it is now but in a world where CPUs are 100x more powerful than they are currently.

Very true!
I am planing to upgrade to intel 980 (six core) but mainly for other reasons than Nebula resource demands.

This fact.
When I build my new machine I take some test with nebula.
(i like the tests :ugeek: )
I can run more than 50 nebula (!) without dropout.
No cuda.i7 860 4GB RAM
But it wasnt a real project: I use only nebulas.

When put the nebulas into a real workflow -with UAD and native plugs- usually I can run just 10 or more a few piece .

Hm yeah, I definitely need to upgrade my CPU regardless. You're talking about 50 instances of 11-kernel console emulation programs? That would probably even hasten my upgrade, honestly.

Not only heavy programs used.
I put eq-s, pre-s, tapes everything without conception.
Just build the new PC and let see what can do...
I loaded an old project, removed all the plugins and drop nebulas into inserts, busses, and fx channels. A few on the busses a lot of on the inserts.
But just nebulas run!!
Nothing other.
Very different the situation if you use other kind of plugs together.

Hallo Matyas!
Can you explain it to me one more time?
-If you use Nebula as the only plug-in, you are up to 50 instances of Nebula?
-If you mix it with other plug-ins, you would reach only to 10 Nebulas?
Is that what you wanted to say?
