Distortion when using any compression program...

Postby unstruck » Sat Jan 11, 2014 9:58 am

Hi,

I'm new to nebula-just bought the server version a few days ago and am looking forward to incorporating it into my workflow.

When I use any compressor program (just bought cupwise 9k) I get unpleasant high frequency distortion on transients with any amount of gain reduction.

I am being careful with my gain staging both in and out. I'm well below clipping even on my peaks and there is no distortion unless I get some gain reduction going.

Is there a setting I can change to get this working?

Many thanks,

-Nate

Hello Nate. This type of attack level fluctuation can not be handle very well in Nebula. You can try with other type of compressor library, "snap" types for example. You should also use some ahead time and HPF in the SC.

Gemini Audio KultComp, G76, and G2500 are able to handle such signals without distortion. Just try the demos (Use "NC" programs for best results)

its an issue with nebula and how it handles bass heavy signals. i imagine if you look close you'll see that any comp does it with that bass clip.

Cupwise, not at all.
None on my compressions doing this with bass frequencies:

melon jack, yeah i meant any nebula comp does it. 76D isn't my comp, so your example just proves me right about that.

the fact of the matter is that nebula comps are still flawed and that's probably the biggest problem with them. i've only slowly come to realize how bad nebula is at handling bass myself, but it's one of the reasons why i've always charged usually under 20$ for my comps, and haven't ever claimed that they are just like the hardware. even with that limitation i feel like they are still worth that much.

it's a nebula flaw. it'd be nice if acustica found some way around it... the best solution would have to come from them.

but i have some ideas for solutions on my end, which won't be perfect but would be better, if they work out.

Cupwise, thanks for the info.

I have your Slick9k and Rayphlex and have been enjoying them immensely.

Rayphlex seems to to deal with bass a bit better.

Any tricks to getting better results with bass or am I better of using Algo plugs for that??
