New user: Reverbs (VNXT, AITB) glitch despite tweaks

Postby harmonik » Wed Jun 05, 2013 4:06 am

Hi All:

I read up on Nebula Pro 3 before taking the plunge but even still, now that I've bought it and started the journey, I'm encountering tweaking problems right away! Does this mean I'm an official member? :D

Listen to the problem (100% wet, reverb is clipping sporadically; here on the 3rd beat and last beat):

- this is a simple repeated snare hit through VNXT EMT140 2sec demo (same velocity each hit of single sample, using NI Battery). I tried other tests (e.g. Superior Drummer hits); these had the same problem.

Here are other setup details:
- i7 2700K 3.5GHz, 16 GB RAM
- Win 7 64
- RME Babyface soundcard (latest FW/drivers)
- Cubase 7.0.4 64 (RME ASIO driver selected)
- Nebula Reverb dll - 64 bit, ver 1.3.505
- 44.1/24 project
- 1 Nebula instance as insert
- rate conversion arrow (96 -> 44.1) not blinking.
- monitoring DPCLatency app performance, looks fine

Variables that I've tried (incl. varying relative to each other) that do not fix the sporadic clipping:
- varying sound card buffer from 96 to 2048 samples buffer
- varying MAST DSPBUFFER from 512 to 8192
- varying MAST L FREQD from 2.932s to 11.889s
(MAST changes were done by changing a MAST setting, click save on MAST page, removing Nebula by selecting "no effect" in Cubase insert, then re-loading Nebula to the insert)

For example, playing the snare hits with soundcard at 256 samples, DSPBUFFER at 8192 and L FREQD at 2.932s the PRF is only 4% in Nebula, Cubase performance load meter is only the smallest possible green sliver, and Win 7 task manager CPU Usage is only 1-3%.

Here are some screenshots from that:

Tried some AITB EAR plates too, same result.

Please advise so I can pass my first Nebula patience test!

1st question ...

What 'level' are you hitting NEBULA at ???

Before you answer ... there are multiple 'meter' settings within Nebula ... so, to avoid confusion [for all of us] ... if you have something like 'FreeG' plugin that can give a numeric readout of both PEAK and RMS.

FreeG shows -3.54 peak for the above setup, which initially seems ok as less than 0. (RMS is only slightly less since the snares are mostly transient). Also, since it is the same sample/level every hit, the sporadic clipping didn't suggest gain to me (i.e. I would have expected all or nothing if clipping).

However, when I trim down so it's like -10 peak, the problem is gone.

Thanks!

Definitely trim down. If you read the info out there, Nebula is modeled to be hit with levels more like -12db to -18db. These are sensible levels anyway, so if you are working with levels that hot, now is a good time to read up on old-school gain-staging and rethink your work-flow to accommodate.

Thanks. This was a test run, not a project with proper gain staging, but I did learn that a clip in Nebula may happen for a peak showing -3.54 (maybe true peak is seen as higher).

Peak does not means true peak! Plus inside Nebula new peaks will made due your are processing the signal with the emulation preset. To be sure put a true peak brick wall limiter (x4 oversampling) before Nebula and try again
