Lofi/down-sample artifacts using compressors?

Postby faun2500 » Mon Aug 01, 2011 3:46 pm

I have been testing some compressors and I am getting a lo-fi/bit-crushed/down-sampled sound when using most of the 3rd party compressors. I'm not clipping Nebula but this sound is there when listening on headphones. Compressor settings are quite subtle too.

I am using latest version of Neb-Pro.

Do I have some settings wrong? I just did a fresh install.

Thanks for any help.

Are you hitting them too hot? If you hit some programs too far above 0VU you can get some pretty weird reactions. It won't clip Nebula, either, as it's technically within the tolerance of the plugin (but not the program).

RMS - 18 Peaks - 9.

I notice that the fastest release times make the sound but if I back off the release it goes away. Is this normal? I didn't notice it that much before.

Actually, I think it's because I'm using a bass heavy source. Will use side chain and a filter. :ugeek:

Even though Neb compression still has its flaws, especially working at anything above moderate settings, some / alot of hardware compressors can sound pretty f*(&#%^ ruff with fast settings, especially with bass heavy stuff.

That sounded like intermodulation distortion! With heavy bass especially, if the release is set to fast you could induce this effect. Increasing release or using the filter as you did should fix that.
